1956, The students of the Lemnos High School, in a rally for the liberation of Cyprus from the British. 1960 – The 2nd officer of the Greek cargo ship “Phoevos” Christoforos Gerondoudis with the ship’s radio officer and a Greek resident of the port of Bunbury in Western Australia, filed an entire fishing boat, in two hours, with more than 300 crabs, since there is an abundance in the area.

1964, The small town-Australian Port of Albany. The crew of m.v. “Phoevos” was invited to play football by a local Italian team. Luckily, we had two players (the electrician and an engineer) who had played professional football in Greece. Chief Officer Christoforos Gerondoudis (1) with his team (11 players from a crew of 32) won the local Italian team by 6-0.

1964, Port of Shanghai in China with M.v. “Phoevos”. Our crew was invited to play volley ball with the local National team of Red China. We used to practice at sea, when the cargo halls were empty. It was a very nice experience, but we lost 3-0.

Lyons” Christoforos Gerondoudis.

1965, The Greek steamship “Richard D. Lyons”. The Greek shipowners agreed, when they bought the ship, not to change its name. Richard D. Lyons was a Canadian pilot who was killed in World War II.

About the Author

He was born in Asmara, Eritrea of Abyssinia in 1903 and died in Athens in 1991. He was fluent in Greek and Italian and also spoke French and English. From 1935 he lived on his beloved island of Lemnos starting his own family.
